About this calculator
Is this an official permit determination?
No. It compares your dimensions against each state’s published thresholds so you know what to expect. The state issues the permit against the specific route you run, and a bridge, overpass or construction zone on that route can change the requirements. Why do escort requirements change by road type?
Most states write two sets of escort thresholds: one for two-lane undivided highways and one for four-lane or divided highways. The same 13′-wide load can need a front escort on a two-lane and only a rear escort on an interstate, because oncoming traffic is the risk being managed. What makes a load a superload?
Every state sets its own trigger, usually a width, height, length or gross weight ceiling above the ordinary oversize range. Cross it and the permit goes through engineering review — bridge analysis, a route survey and often police escorts — which adds days to the lead time. The calculator shows the state’s threshold and whether you are over it.
Why isn’t KPRA calculated?
Kingpin-to-rear-axle depends on where your axles actually sit, not on overall length, so guessing it would be worse than leaving it out. Does the $20 change with the size of the load?
No. Permigo charges a flat $20 service fee per state permit whether the load is an inch over or a superload. The state’s own permit fee is billed at cost on the same invoice, itemised, with nothing added.
