“Escort” gets used for three arrangements that differ in cost, lead time and legal effect. Conflating them is expensive.

A height pole is not just another escort
States that require a height pole require a calibrated pole vehicle specifically. Sending a standard pilot car in its place is a violation, and the load moves anyway — straight at a clearance nobody measured. Confirm which one the permit calls for before you book.
Dimension times road tier
Most guides present escort rules as a single width threshold per state. That is not how the rules are written. A typical state regulation is a grid: for a given dimension band, on a given class of road, you need a specific escort arrangement.
The road tier matters because the risk is different. On a two-lane road an oversize load occupies the oncoming lane, so the warning has to reach traffic coming toward you — hence a front escort. On a divided multilane, traffic overtakes from behind, so the warning has to reach traffic behind you — hence a rear escort. Same load, same width, opposite answer.
Worked example: Alabama
Alabama makes the pattern obvious. At 12 to 14 feet wide, the escort requirement flips depending on the road you are on.

A route that mixes both road types inside one state needs an escort arrangement that satisfies the stricter reading for the whole trip, or a route that avoids the switch. This is exactly the kind of detail that turns a cheap permit into an expensive day.

Escort rules get the attention, but travel restrictions cause more missed appointments.
- Night movement. Most states restrict over-dimension travel to daylight hours. Some allow night movement on interstates and specific divided highways only, and usually only below a width threshold.
- Weekends and holidays. Many states prohibit movement from a Friday or Saturday cut-off through Monday morning, with extended bans around major holidays.
- Metro peak hours. Urban curfews commonly close the morning and evening peaks, independent of the statewide rule.
- Weather and wind. High-profile loads are frequently grounded by wind-speed limits, which no amount of planning gets around.

A load that needs a police escort through a metro area, cannot move at night, and cannot move on a Sunday has a very narrow slot. Two states with mismatched windows can add a full day to a trip that looked like it fit. Plan the windows before the escorts.
What escorts cost
Escorts are billed by the escort provider, not the DOT, and not by us. Rates are typically per mile with a daily minimum, and vary by region, by how far the escort has to deadhead to reach you, and by whether a pole is fitted. Police escorts are set by the agency and are consistently the most expensive line on a heavy-haul move.

When do I need a pilot car?
It depends on the state, the dimension you are over on, and the type of road. Width is the usual trigger and thresholds commonly begin around 12 feet, but the same width can require a different escort arrangement on a two-lane than on a multilane. Height and length trigger escorts independently.
What is the difference between a pilot car and a height pole?
A pilot car is an escort vehicle with signage and lights that warns traffic and guides the load. A height pole is a pilot car fitted with a calibrated pole set slightly above the load height, run ahead to detect low clearances before the load reaches them. States that require a height pole say so specifically — a standard escort does not satisfy it.
When is a police escort required instead of a civilian one?
States mandate police escorts above certain dimensions, on certain routes, or through specific urban areas. Police escorts cost substantially more than civilian ones and have to be scheduled with the agency, which is often the longest lead time in the whole permit.
Can I run at night with an oversize load?
Usually not. Most states restrict over-dimension movement to daylight, and many prohibit travel entirely on weekends and holidays or through metro areas at peak hours. These blackout windows wreck more schedules than the escort requirement itself.
