Exceed any one of these in Delaware and the load needs a permit. No overall cap on a tractor-semitrailer — only the 53' trailer is measured, and it is measured with the load on it. The published rear and front overhang caps are separate rules. 60' is the truck-and-trailer cap. A trailer longer than 53' re-activates the state's 60' overall cap. Delaware measures the semitrailer with the load on it — § 4503(b)(2) caps a semitrailer “including any load thereon” at 53' on the Interstate, federal-aid primary and US numbered routes — so a rear tail spends the trailer’s remainder rather than sitting outside it. A 48' trailer gets 5'; a 53' trailer gets none, and 1' of tail needs a permit. The 6' rear and 3' front caps above still bind on a shorter trailer: a 40' trailer has 13' of trailer room but only 6' of overhang allowance. Front and rear are capped separately, not combined.

You need a permit in Delaware once the load exceeds any one of these: 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, or 80,000 lb gross. There is no overall length cap on a normal tractor-semitrailer — the trailer itself is capped at 53' instead, measured with any rear overhang inside it. Axle limits apply too — 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem.
When does Delaware require an escort?
