Break either and it is a permit load under 15-301. The exemption does not run on Saturdays, Sundays or the six legal holidays, so a rig that is legal Thursday needs a permit Saturday. Do I need an oversize permit in Illinois?
You need a permit in Illinois once the load exceeds any one of these: 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, or 80,000 lb gross. There is no overall length cap on a normal tractor-semitrailer — the trailer itself is capped at 53' instead. Hauling a structural object that cannot be dismantled, two length figures apply and both have to hold: the object itself may not exceed 80', and vehicle plus load may not exceed 100' overall. Axle limits apply too — 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem.
When does Illinois require an escort?
