Florida Turnpike oversize restrictions: toll-road widths, lanes and heights

How wide and how high a load can go on Florida’s Turnpike and toll roads, from FDOT’s own list: no single 12-foot cap, but a limit at each toll plaza and ramp.

Several permit sites say Florida’s Turnpike takes loads up to 12 feet wide and 13 feet 6 inches high. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) sets no such cap. It limits width at named toll plazas and ramps, from 9 to 15 feet, and lists the Turnpike overpasses a tall load has to fit under. The tables below are FDOT’s list.

The short version

There’s no single width or height limit on Florida’s Turnpike. FDOT’s route restrictions, revised July 2026, cap width at 94 toll plazas and ramps; the tightest are Turnpike ramps, at 9 feet at two, 10 feet at four. The Turnpike’s low overpasses run from 14 feet 4 inches to 15 feet 6 inches. No toll road issues its own oversize permit, because FDOT’s permit covers the Turnpike (Rule 14-61.0015(3)). Permigo files it for $20, with no extra fee for Turnpike miles. Permigo read FDOT’s sheet on October 16, 2026. Florida’s own permit rules are on the Florida page.

Set your load’s width and height. Red dots are too narrow or too low for it. Amber dots take it only in the lane FDOT names. Green rings are clear. Tap a dot to see FDOT’s limits there. The sliders also mark the matching rows in the tables below.

How wide can a load be on Florida’s toll roads?

It depends on the route. The wider the load, the more toll plazas and ramps it has to avoid. This table counts them from FDOT’s list.

Listed toll-road points a load can’t pass, by width (FDOT’s route restrictions, revised July 2026, read October 16, 2026)

So a permit’s route has to avoid every point the load can’t clear. A 10-foot load can’t leave the Turnpike northbound at SR-838, where the off-ramp takes 9 feet, so its route uses another exit. Over 16 feet wide, a load is a superload in Florida, which the superload guide explains. Every point is listed at the end of this guide.

The line “Florida turnpike limit is 12′ wide, 13′6 high” is printed, almost word for word, on at least three permit-service sites Permigo read on October 16, 2026. FDOT’s route restrictions don’t say it, and neither do its blanket permit movement conditions, its “When do you need a permit?” sheet or the Turnpike’s rule. 13 feet 6 inches is Florida’s legal height.

How high can a load be on the Turnpike?

Florida’s legal height is 13 feet 6 inches, and routine permits go up to 18 feet. Between the two, the Turnpike’s overpasses decide the route. FDOT lists 8 low points on the Turnpike and its Homestead Extension (SR-821).

Which lane does a wide load use at a toll plaza?

The one FDOT names. Over 12 feet, 23 plazas and ramps send the load to a named lane, most often the outer-right. Three Sample Road and Pinellas Bayway points start lower, at 10 or 11 feet.

Do you need a separate permit for the Turnpike?

No. The Turnpike’s rule lets a vehicle over legal size onto the Turnpike with FDOT’s oversize permit (“a special hauling permit issued by the Department in accordance with Chapter 14-26”). That’s Rule 14-61.0015(3), amended December 5, 2018. Older pages cite Rule 14-61.0014, repealed the same day. Permigo files the Florida permit for $20, Turnpike miles included.

Tolls are separate. The Turnpike charges by axle count and distance, its FAQ says, so an oversize load pays by its axles like any truck. The Florida permit’s own fee is in the cost guide.

The one Turnpike permit is for Turnpike Tandems, two long trailers behind one tractor. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise issues it, and a tandem may be no wider than 8 feet 6 inches or higher than 13 feet 6 inches (Rule 14-61.0017). It isn’t an oversize permit.

Escorts on the Turnpike

The Turnpike adds no escort rule of its own. Florida’s Rule 14-26.012 treats limited-access roads like the Turnpike differently in three cases:

  • Over 16' wide, Rule 14-26.012 requires two law enforcement escorts on state-maintained roads that are not limited-access facilities. On a limited-access facility it asks for two qualified escorts by day, or one law enforcement and one qualified escort at night.
  • Over 150' long, Rule 14-26.012 requires two escorts, front and rear, unless the load is on a limited-access facility, where one is enough.
  • Self-propelled equipment built for off-road use may not move on a limited-access road at all.

The Florida page has the full escort table.

Which roads do these limits cover?

All of Florida’s toll roads on FDOT’s sheet. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise runs the roads on its system maps: the Turnpike (SR-91) and its Homestead Extension (SR-821), the Sawgrass Expressway (SR-869), the Polk Parkway (SR-570), the Veterans Expressway and Suncoast Parkway (SR-589), the Seminole Expressway, Southern Connector Extension, Western Beltway and Beachline expressways (parts of SR-417, SR-429 and SR-528), the I-4 Connector, the First Coast Expressway (SR-23) and the Garcon Point Bridge (SR-281).

Around Orlando, the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) runs SR-408, SR-414, SR-451, SR-453, SR-538, SR-551 and the rest of SR-417, SR-429 and SR-528. The sheet also covers Alligator Alley (I-75), the Sunshine Skyway (I-275), the Pinellas Bayway and the Mid-Bay Bridge. On October 16, 2026, Permigo found no oversize permit on CFX’s permitting page or the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority’s site.

Common questions

What is the maximum width for an oversize load on Florida’s Turnpike?

There is no single maximum. The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Blanket Permit Route Restrictions, revised July 2026 and read by Permigo on October 16, 2026, set a width limit at each listed toll plaza and ramp: 9 feet at two, 10 feet at four (all Turnpike ramps), and 11 to 15 feet at the rest. A route that avoids the tight ramps can carry a wider load, and Florida’s routine permits go up to 16 feet wide. Over 12 feet, many plazas take the load in one named lane.

Is the Florida Turnpike limit 12 feet wide and 13 feet 6 inches high?

No. Florida’s Turnpike has no single 12-foot width limit or 13-foot-6 height limit. The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) route restrictions, revised July 2026 and read by Permigo on October 16, 2026, cap width at named plazas and ramps, from 9 to 15 feet. Several permit-service sites print “12′ wide, 13′6 high” for the Turnpike, but FDOT’s sheet, its permit movement conditions and the Turnpike’s rule don’t. 13 feet 6 inches is Florida’s legal height and the Turnpike Tandem cap.

Do I need a separate permit for Florida’s Turnpike?

No. Rule 14-61.0015(3) lets a vehicle over legal size onto the Turnpike System on the Florida Department of Transportation’s oversize permit (Chapter 14-26) or a Turnpike Tandem permit, so the Florida permit for the trip covers the Turnpike miles. The older Rule 14-61.0014 was repealed on December 5, 2018. Permigo files the Florida permit for $20, with no extra fee for Turnpike miles. Tolls are separate.

How low are the overpasses on Florida’s Turnpike?

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) route restrictions, revised July 2026, list 8 low points on the Turnpike (SR-91) and its Homestead Extension (SR-821), from 14 feet 4 inches under the Leg A ramp on SR-91 to 15 feet 6 inches under SR-706, including a construction zone near US-301, at mile marker 305, at 14 feet 8 inches. Florida’s legal height is 13 feet 6 inches, and its routine permits go up to 18 feet.

Which lane does a load over 12 feet wide use at a Florida toll plaza?

The lane the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) names for that plaza, on its route restrictions revised July 2026. Most listed plazas use the outer-right lane, including Three Lakes, Celebration and Lake Jesup. Everglades East (I-75 northbound) and Pinellas Bayway East use the outer-left. Both Sunshine Skyway plazas and the Western Beltway plaza southbound name the outer-left and outer-right lanes. Two Pinellas Bayway plazas and a Sample Road ramp set their rules from 10 or 11 feet.

Do CFX expressways and Florida’s other toll roads follow the same rules?

Yes. The Florida Department of Transportation’s route restrictions list points on the expressways around Orlando, on Alligator Alley, the Sunshine Skyway, the Pinellas Bayway and the Mid-Bay Bridge, beside the Turnpike. The Central Florida Expressway Authority’s (CFX) permitting page covers utility work only. On October 16, 2026, Permigo found no oversize permit on CFX’s or the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority’s sites. The Florida permit covers the trip.

What does Florida’s Turnpike cost an oversize load?

Florida’s Turnpike adds only its toll for an oversize load, and there’s no Turnpike permit fee. The Turnpike charges by axle count and distance (Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise FAQ, read October 16, 2026), so an oversize load pays by its axles like any truck. The Florida permit has its own fee, listed in Permigo’s cost guide, and Permigo’s fee to file it is $20, with no extra charge for Turnpike miles.

Who do I contact about an oversize load on Florida’s Turnpike?

Call the Florida Department of Transportation’s State Permit Office at (850) 410-5777, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. It issues Florida’s oversize permits and keeps the route restrictions; FDOT listed this number on October 16, 2026. Florida’s own permit rules are on Permigo’s Florida page. Permigo, which files the permit, answers at +1 (786) 494-6912 or through the contact page.
